Lakefront Custom Home Design, South Carolina

Modern Lakefront Home

ABOUT DESIGN

This custom lakefront home plan was designed for a stunning, sloped half-acre lot overlooking Strom Thurmond Lake in South Carolina. The concept began with a clean rectangular mass that gently contrasts the rugged topography—an approach often found in beautiful modern houses that value harmony with nature.

To maximize light, space, and function, the design separates the home into two volumes connected by an open-air canopy. This not only emphasizes entry and movement but also cleverly addresses local zoning offsets. The west wing houses the main living areas, including a spacious great room and a master suite with expansive lake views. The east wing contains guest rooms, a studio apartment, and a garage—accessible via a corridor tucked discreetly behind the central passage.

The project adapts to the lot's steep terrain with thoughtful architectural moves. While the original idea featured a sloped shed roof, we transitioned to a twisted gable roof system better suited to the regulations and site. The roof is framed by composite-clad parapet walls—designed to unify the form, conceal future solar panels, and resolve tricky material transitions.

Materials are chosen with care for both performance and Southern charm: ICF walls, metal trusses, and concrete floors help minimize termite risk while staying true to the rustic, elegant look of lakefront home plans. Exterior elements like stone, wood siding, and metalwork create a timeless balance between modern lines and regional character.

The lower level adds a second living zone with a media room, game room, wet bar, and guest suite—an ideal setup for gatherings during events like The Masters. Storage was redesigned for efficiency, and a previously proposed closed wall was opened up to preserve the valuable lake view.

This plan is a great example of sloped lot house plans done right—functional, elegant, and deeply personal.
